Title: Human factors in the delivery and sustainability of health services

Across the world, countries and national and international organizations are concerned about the delivery and sustainability of health services. Evidence shows that healthcare delivery is far from being optimal: many preventable medical errors occur that harm patients; many patients are not receiving the recommended preventive services, etc... Human factors researchers and professionals have a lot to contribute to the design of high-quality health services. They can help to ensure that the needs of patients and their families are met by participating in the design of healthcare technologies, processes and systems. Examples of human factors interventions targeted at improving the delivery and sustainability of health services will be described. The presentation will conclude with suggestions to encourage the human factors discipline and profession to participate in the design of high-quality health services.
